THE BUCCANEERS

The Buccaneers were a jazz band put together for the 1982/1983 Wellington Summer City Programme by Neill Duncan. Initially fronted by vocalist Callie Blood, vocalist May Lloyd also joined the band followed by composer and pianist Johnathan Besser. Neill and Stuart were from the Primitive Art Group/Braille Collective, May was vocalist for the Protons, Johnathan was from New York and Australian born drummer Roger Sellers was not long back in New Zealand after a long stint in the United Kingdom playing with the likes of Nucleus.

The Buccaneers disbanded at the end of the season and never recorded. Neill, Stuart and Johnathan were free spirits and I enjoyed that about them. I had previously worked with Johnathan on a film soundtrack and in Cultural Affairs and I learned a lot from my association with Roger, having the good fortune to work with him again on Moving Lines 1 in 1986. Sadly Roger died in 2018, Neill in 2021 and Johnathan earlier this year (2022).

This page is dedicated to their memory.
